SANTA CLARA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

RESOLUTION ADOPTING A SEAL OF BILITERACY AWARDS TO

RECOGNIZED SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT IN LEARNING TWO LANGUAGES

RESOLUTION NO. 11-29

WHEREAS, preparing all students with language and communication skills is critical for college and career readiness; and

WHEREAS, the study of world languages prepares students to communicate effectively in the 21st century and contributes toward our nation economy;

WHEREAS, the demand for employees fluent in more than one language is increasing in California, and throughout the world;

WHEREAS, building trust and understanding across numerous language and cultural groups in our diverse community, requires multilingual communication skills; and

WHEREAS, master of two or more languages makes important contributions to a student's cognitive development, critical thinking, problem solving, understanding of diverse cultures, and economic opportunities;

WHEREAS, the district's English Learner Master Plan seeks to provide opportunities for students to be biliterate and graduate with the ability to communicate in two or more languages; and

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Santa Clara Unified School District hereby adopts the county Seal of Biliteracy to recognize the attainment of those needed and important skills for biliteracy achievement and Pathway to Biliteracy awards to recognize mastery of significant bilingual benchmarks at the elementary and middle school levels.
