Naming Of Facility

It is the sole responsibility of the Governing Board to name school and district facilities, whether they be entire schools, a building, a portion of a building, a room, fields, or any other property of the district. The Governing Board shall not name a facility directly after any individually or obviously identifiable person, either living or dead. At no time shall the Governing Board give up its right or responsibility to name or rename a school or district facility.

When naming a school facility, the Superintendent will solicit feedback from staff, parents, students, and others from the community to submit to the Board for consideration. Before adopting any proposed name, the Board shall hold a public hearing at which members of the public will be given the opportunity to provide further input.

Criteria for Selecting a Name

1. The name selected shall be relevant and meaningful to the school community and be considered one that will stand the test of time (i.e., not be "trendy").

2. New names for schools should fit well with the names of other schools of the district.

3. It is appropriate and permissible when selecting a name to consider the geography of a site and the names of neighborhood streets.

4. The name should be unique and dissimilar from other names of schools/facilities in SCSD, the City of San Carlos, or those of neighboring districts and cities.

Renaming of School Facility

The renaming of existing schools or major facilities shall only be considered under extraordinary circumstances and only after: 1) thorough review by the Superintendent; 2) a public hearing; and, 3) approval of the Board.
